This edition of StraatFest is all about ballroom. Step into a day filled with dance, music, and street culture, brimming with the energy of the ballroom scene! An open event for the community, a safe space for expression and fun. Everyone is welcome to come together and celebrate! Dive headfirst into the world of ballroom and the Afro- and Latin American diaspora that inspired it. Workshops, living sculptures, samba, and street food. And to top it all off: a Mini Ballroom Function—six categories, one theme: street life!

This event is curated by The Real Miss Colombia Mermaids, ambassador of the Utrecht Ballroom Scene, in collaboration with RAUM Utrecht. 

16:00 - 18:00 – Craft Workshop with Rox Capriles

Pimp your cap with Rox Capriles! In street culture, a cap is a crown, and Rox will help you create the crown you deserve. Beads, fabrics, drawings, and rhinestones. We’ll have some caps ready, but PLEASE bring your own cap!! 

16:00 - 18:00 – Wig Workshop with Luluh 007

During the day, join the wig workshop led by ballroom mother-figure Luluh 007! Get ready for the mini-function or just learn the ins and outs of the craft. Sign up quickly via the link—there’s room for 12 people. 

16:00 - 18:00 – Fun & Games

Host Khareem encourages everyone to play together. The Pleinotheek is open, so there are plenty of board games, ball games, shuffleboards, and water guns to keep you entertained. We’ll also set up SjoelSjoel and Soft Spot, so plenty to do! 

18:00 - 19:30 – Street Dinner

Join us for dinner with hostess MC Maybelline. She brings humor, charisma, and non-stop energy to the dinner and of course she’s also the hostess of the event. We’re bringing delicious Colombian street food from Claudia’s to the square, straight from their food truck. For the first course, they’ll serve arepas & empanadas. The second course is a delicious, juicy burrito. But that’s not all: dancer QottonZ will perform as a living statue and contortionist on the table. And Andrea, the founder of the Utrecht Ballroom Scene, will talk between courses about the origins and significance of ballroom and explain how a ball actually works. The meal will be accompanied by OISHĪ, who as a DJ blends deep house, percussion, and hard groove with soundscapes. She’ll keep things mellow during dinner, but afterward she’ll set the right vibe for the Mini Ballroom Function! 

19:30 - 19:45 – Performance by La Divina

For dessert, La Divina brings her Aruban and Colombian roots together in dance and performance. The warmth and energy of both cultures come together as she competes in ballroom categories like Body and Sex Siren. She always brings the fire to the dance floor, and today she’ll do so in a samba performance full of passion! 

19:45 - 21:00 – Mini Ballroom Function - Street Life

We’ve been building up to the Mini Ballroom Function all day. The Street becomes a runway with judges Andrea, Luluh, and Khareem. MC Maybelline takes you on a journey through the entire function and keeps the energy HIGH! DJ OISHĪ provides the right hits and sets the tone for the party. Six categories, one theme: Street Life. The Dutch Ballroom Scene comes together for fun and prizes. 

Categories:

1. Designer’s Delight: CROWNED CAP - In streets-culture, a cap has always been a crown. Latin American and Caribbean alchemy turns leftovers into untouchable fashion statements no one can ignore. Bring it in your one-of-a-kind, (wildly) customized cap, heavy with who you are and show us why nobody can touch your crown! 

2. Runway: Bring it with statement sunglasses and make sure you sell it on the runway!

3. Performance: Bring your best street style prop and give us a show! (OV Chip card, Newspaper, Pizza box, Street sign, Takeout cup, etc)  

4. Sex Appeal: Bring your own version of a video vixen.

5. Realness: It’s summertime, so we want to see you shine, bring it in a multicolored look!

6. Shake Dat Ass: What is street culture without a little dancing? No dress code required.
